Emerging from the ecological philosophy of Upstream Ecology, the Upstream Ecology Foundation works across the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve to restore degraded habitats, strengthen biodiversity, and support long-term relationships between communities and landscape.

The Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve spans over 5,500 sq. km across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, forming part of one of the world’s eight “hottest hotspots” for biodiversity.
Older than the Himalayas
The shola-grassland systems of the Nilgiris are estimated to be over 2.6 million years old and continue to function as critical water catchments for peninsular India.
